About
Muriel Salimin is from the Netherlands of a family with Surinamese/Indonesian roots, and moved from Amsterdam to New York over 20 years ago to build a career in the men’s fashion industry. She specialized in denim development and worked as a denim designer at Pepe Jeans, then at Sean John, before moving to Macy’s Merchandising Group’s private label brand American Rag. During her career she led Design teams in various denim and men’s apparel categories, as well as Director of Trend, Research & Development. She traveled extensively for research and design inspiration as well as working directly with factories across the globe.
She has been consulting for fashion brands like EFM, Nonchalant and several retail companies including Winston Retail (Macy’s and Walmart) in roles varying from merchandising to product development and project management.
Besides her ongoing consulting work, she also founded the MUUR brand with the clear intent of bringing together her passion for design/product development and working with small artisan factories. She developed indigo batik and small leather goods collections handcrafted by artisans in Indonesia. This resulted in several collaborations like Kingpins Show, American Express and the 1Hotel.
One of her other passions is running. She is actively involved in the local running community, whether running as pacer for marathon training programs, or assisting in community events and races. "Running has taken her all over the country and world, to compete in marathons in places like Boston, London, Cuba, and South Africa, opening relationships with local running communities there.
She is also a longtime member of her church, where she is actively involved in community events. She attended overseas mission trips where she used her professional experience to lead business seminars for small artisan makers or volunteered in medical clinics.
